Hear Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer speak about his recent interactive installations in public spaces.
These include Voz Alta, a memorial for the Tlatelolco student massacre in Mexico City, Levels of Nothingness, a performance for the 50th anniversary of the Guggenheim Museum in NYC and Vectorial Elevation, a project restaged for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Inspired by phantasmagoria, carnival and animatronics, his light and shadow works are “antimonuments for alien agency”.

Surveillance has become a major technique in the everyday organisation and orchestration of social life. Central to surveillance operation are the acts of watching and being watched and these experiential processes are now deeply entrenched in the artistic imagination.
Join Dr Gavin J. D. Smith, Lecturer in Sociology and Social Policy and Convenor of The Surveillance and Everyday Life Research Group, as he discusses the social and political contribution of Rafael Lozano Hemmer’s Recorders exhibition and its relationship with contemporary theoretical articulations of surveillance.
